Prime Minister Modi Sets New Record for Longest Continuous Elected Tenure

Prime Minister Modi Sets New Record

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday created history by becoming India’s longest-serving continuously elected Prime Minister, completing 4,399 consecutive days in office and surpassing the record previously held by Jawaharlal Nehru.

Modi first took oath as Prime Minister on May 26, 2014, after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a decisive victory in the Lok Sabha elections. He was re-elected for a second term in 2019 and began his third consecutive term in June 2024, making him the first Prime Minister since Nehru to win three successive general elections.

With the completion of 4,399 uninterrupted days in office, Modi overtook Nehru’s record of 4,398 consecutive days served as an elected Prime Minister after India’s first general election. The milestone has been described by BJP leaders as a reflection of sustained public support and political stability.

Leaders from several countries, members of the Indian diaspora, and political figures extended congratulations to Modi on the occasion. Messages highlighted India’s growing role on the global stage and acknowledged his long tenure in public office.

The BJP and NDA leaders are expected to mark the occasion through meetings and events celebrating the government’s achievements over the past 12 years. Supporters have pointed to initiatives related to infrastructure development, digital transformation, welfare schemes, and India’s expanding international presence during Modi’s tenure.

However, opposition parties have argued that the milestone should also invite scrutiny of the government’s performance on issues such as unemployment, inflation, social harmony, and democratic institutions.

Regardless of political perspectives, Modi’s achievement represents a significant chapter in India’s democratic history, underscoring his enduring influence on the country’s political landscape.
