The Indian Army is focusing on upgrading its existing combat platforms with advanced technology to prepare for future battlefield challenges. At the curtain raiser event for Mechanisation Technology Seminar 2.0 (Mech Tech 2.0) in New Delhi, Lieutenant General Pushpendra Pal Singh, General Officer Commanding in Chief of Western Command, highlighted the growing role of drones, artificial intelligence (AI), precision weapons and other emerging technologies in modern warfare.
According to the Ministry of Defence announcement, the initiative aims to improve the effectiveness, survivability and capabilities of existing military platforms through Indian innovation and practical technological solutions.
Focus on Real Battlefield Challenges
- Addressing the event, Lt Gen Singh said that developing new military capabilities is important, but finding smarter ways to improve existing platforms is equally necessary.
- He explained that the Army cannot replace its entire fleet whenever new technology emerges. Instead, existing equipment can be upgraded to make it more capable, effective and better suited to future combat requirements.
- The initiative follows a practical, bottom-up approach that begins by identifying the actual challenges faced by soldiers on the ground.
Opportunities for Indian Industry and Startups
- Under Mech Tech 2.0, the Army has identified specific operational challenges and prepared problem definition statements. These are being shared with Indian industries, startups and academic institutions to encourage the development of affordable, innovative and practical solutions.
- The initiative seeks to connect the operational requirements of the armed forces with India’s technology and research capabilities. Promising solutions could help improve the performance of existing combat platforms and strengthen the country’s defence innovation ecosystem.
Seminar Scheduled for December
- The main Mech Tech Seminar 2.0 is scheduled for December 14 and 15, 2026, at Chandimandir. The event is expected to bring together representatives from the armed forces, industry and academia to exchange ideas, showcase technologies and explore solutions to identified military challenges.
- The seminar is part of the broader effort to strengthen India’s domestic defence capabilities and support the national objective of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Strengthening India’s Defence Technology
- The initiative highlights the importance of combining military experience with technological innovation. By focusing on practical battlefield needs, the Army aims to encourage solutions that can improve combat effectiveness without depending entirely on the replacement of existing equipment.
- The success of the initiative will depend on how effectively Indian innovators can translate identified operational requirements into reliable, affordable and field-ready technologies.
