Authorities in Sant Kabir Nagar demolished an allegedly illegal madrassa on Sunday amid heavy security, officials said.
The madrassa, located in the Khalilabad area, was reportedly linked to a UK-based Islamic preacher, Shamshul Huda Khan, who is under investigation for financial and security-related issues.
Why was the madrassa demolished?
According to local administration:
- The madrassa was built without proper approval
- The land was found to be government property
- The building plan was not officially sanctioned
Officials also said that a legal appeal filed by the madrassa committee against the demolition was rejected by the court, clearing the way for action.
Security agencies involved
Multiple agencies, including:
- Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS)
- Enforcement Directorate (ED)
had earlier investigated the preacher. These probes reportedly found:
- Suspected illegal foreign funding
- Possible links to extremist activities
An FIR has also been registered against him.
Heavy security during demolition
Authorities deployed a large number of police personnel at the site to maintain law and order during the demolition process. Senior officials supervised the operation on the ground.
Background of the accused
Officials claim that Shamshul Huda Khan:
- Acquired British citizenship in 2013
- Allegedly sent funds to madrassas through NGOs and personal accounts
- Faces multiple cases including fraud and conspiracy
