Hyderabad City Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar, IPS, has launched a new Zonal Investigation Branch in Golconda Zone as part of efforts to improve the quality of criminal investigations and separate investigation duties from routine law and order responsibilities.
The pilot project was inaugurated on Tuesday at the Golconda Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) office premises in Mehdipatnam.
Dedicated Team for Serious Cases
- According to the police press release dated October 27, the new branch aims to ensure focused and timely investigations into serious and complex criminal cases registered within the zone. Currently, police station staff handle both law and order duties and criminal investigations, often facing additional pressure from bandobust arrangements and other routine responsibilities.
- The dedicated team consists of two Detective Inspectors, one Sub-Inspector, one Head Constable and 10 Constables. It will focus on investigating serious cases, collecting scientific evidence and preparing charge sheets within prescribed timeframes.
- The branch will also coordinate with key departments, including Health, the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and the prosecution, to strengthen evidence collection and support effective prosecution in court.
Focus on Timely Justice and Convictions
- Speaking at the inauguration, Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar said that policing achieves its true purpose when victims receive complete and timely justice. He stressed that routine law and order duties and bandobust arrangements should not affect the quality of criminal investigations.
- The new branch will monitor cases from registration through the filing of charge sheets and work alongside the existing Investigation Monitoring Cell to strengthen supervision of serious investigations at the zonal level.
- The Commissioner also highlighted the importance of modern scientific evidence in securing convictions, rather than relying solely on traditional investigative methods.
Expansion Planned Across Hyderabad
- The new initiative is expected to reduce the investigative workload of local police stations, allowing their personnel to focus more effectively on maintaining law and order and preventing crime.
- Based on the results of the Golconda pilot project, similar Zonal Investigation Branches may be established across other zones under the Hyderabad City Police Commissionerate.
- The inauguration was attended by Additional Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) Tafseer Iqubal, Golconda Zone DCP J. Raghavendar Reddy, Traffic DCP-1 Avinash Kumar, Traffic DCP-2 Kajal Singh, Women Safety Wing DCP Lavanya Nayak and other police officers and staff.
