Secunderabad Railway Station Undergoes ₹715 Crore Redevelopment

One of Telangana’s oldest and busiest railway hubs, Secunderabad Railway Station, is undergoing a major redevelopment project worth ₹715 crore under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS). The ambitious initiative aims to transform the 152 year old station into a modern transport hub equipped with world class passenger amenities and improved connectivity.

Originally opened on October 9, 1874, Secunderabad Junction has played a crucial role in South India’s railway network for more than a century. The station currently handles around 1.97 lakh passengers daily and serves over 200 trains every day, making it one of the busiest stations under the South Central Railway (SCR) zone.

According to railway officials, the redevelopment project has been designed to accommodate future growth in passenger traffic. Once completed, the upgraded station is expected to handle approximately 2.7 lakh passengers per day and nearly 32,500 passengers per hour.

The revamped station will feature new terminal buildings on both the northern and southern sides, each comprising a ground floor and three upper floors. One of the major highlights of the project is the construction of a double storey sky concourse with spacious waiting areas capable of accommodating up to 3,000 passengers at a time.

The sky concourse will also include Cafeterias, Restaurants, Retail outlets and Recreational spaces, offering passengers a more comfortable and convenient travel experience. The project further includes improved passenger circulation areas, enhanced accessibility features for differently abled travellers and better integration with other modes of transport.

Railway authorities have stated that approximately 64 per cent of the redevelopment work has already been completed, with construction progressing while ensuring minimal disruption to regular train services.

The redevelopment is part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, an initiative of the Ministry of Railways aimed at modernising railway stations across the country by improving passenger facilities, enhancing accessibility and promoting seamless multimodal connectivity.

In Telangana, 40 railway stations have been identified for redevelopment under the scheme, with a total estimated investment of ₹2,015 crore.

The transformation of Secunderabad Railway Station is expected to significantly improve the travel experience for millions of passengers while preserving the heritage value of one of the region’s most iconic railway landmarks.
