Hyderabad Police, Volunteers Join Hands to Enhance Public and Women’s Safety

Hyderabad Police Volunteers Join Hands

In a significant step towards strengthening community policing and enhancing public safety, Hyderabad City Police has introduced a new ‘Police Mentors Program’ under its existing Margadarshak initiative. Announcing the initiative, Hyderabad City Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar, IPS, said that one police constable will now be designated as a mentor in every police station across the city.

The police mentors will work closely with Margadarshak volunteers at the field level, creating a stronger coordination mechanism between the police and the community. The initiative aims to improve emergency response, increase public participation in safety efforts and build greater trust between citizens and law enforcement agencies.

The announcement was made by Commissioner Sajjanar while addressing the closing ceremony of the Margadarshak training programme organised by the Hyderabad City Security Council (HCSC) at the TGICCC Auditorium in Banjara Hills. During the event, certificates were presented to 80 volunteers who successfully completed the training programme. The Commissioner also unveiled the Margadarshak logo and inaugurated the second phase of the training initiative.

Speaking on the occasion, Sajjanar said the primary objective of the Margadarshak programme is to encourage citizens to become active participants in ensuring public safety, women’s safety and emergency services in the city. He stated that trained volunteers would serve as “force multipliers” for the police by extending immediate support to victims and assisting authorities during emergencies.

The volunteers have received specialised training in public safety, emergency response, women’s safety and cyber awareness. They are expected to serve as safety ambassadors within their communities and play a crucial role in promoting awareness and assisting those in need.

Highlighting concerns over crimes against women, the Commissioner noted that many victims of workplace harassment, domestic violence, and other forms of abuse often remain silent due to fear or lack of awareness. He stressed the need for responsible citizens to act as “changemakers” rather than bystanders, helping victims access support systems and justice.

As part of these efforts, the Hyderabad Police has also introduced “Respondana All Women First Responder System” a special initiative designed to provide immediate assistance and reassurance to women in distress. The system seeks to ensure that women can report their concerns freely and without fear, while trained female responders and Margadarshak volunteers offer support and guidance.

The Commissioner further revealed that retired officers, academicians and experts from various fields would be associated with the programme in the future. Police mentors stationed at local police stations will provide continuous support and strengthen safety networks in schools, colleges, gated communities and workplaces.

Emphasising the importance of discipline and quality in both policing and social service, Sajjanar urged volunteers to carry out their responsibilities with dedication and commitment to help build a safer Hyderabad.

Among those present at the event were DCP (Women’s Safety) Dr. Lavanya, HCSC Secretary General C. Sekhar Reddy, Women Forum Joint Secretary Khyati Naravane, and several other officials and volunteers.
