At least 10 people were killed and 64 others injured after fireworks and other pyrotechnic materials exploded during a religious festival in Santa María Canchesdá, Temascalcingo, Mexico, on Saturday night, September 5, 2026.
The explosion happened near the Nuestra Señora de la Luz church, where hundreds of people had gathered for celebrations honouring the Virgin of Light. Reports indicate that fireworks stored in a building near the church exploded, causing part of the structure to collapse.
Emergency teams, firefighters, police and rescue workers rushed to the scene and searched through the debris for victims. Several injured people were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Two priests were also among those injured.
The exact cause of the explosion is still under investigation by authorities in the State of Mexico.
