Washington, D.C.: Pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside the White House during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s meeting with US President Donald Trump, protesting Israel’s Gaza war policies and demanding greater pressure on Israel for a ceasefire and humanitarian assistance.
The demonstrations took place as Netanyahu arrived in Washington for talks with Trump on issues including the Gaza conflict, hostage negotiations, Iran and wider Middle East security concerns.
Protesters carried Palestinian flags and banners, calling for an end to the war and accusing Israel of causing civilian suffering in Gaza. Supporters of Israel, meanwhile, defended Netanyahu’s position, saying Israel’s military actions are focused on security threats and preventing Hamas from rebuilding its capabilities.
Zohran Mamdani’s Netanyahu arrest controversy
The protests also brought renewed attention to comments made by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who had earlier said that if Netanyahu entered New York City, he would seek to have him arrested based on the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant issued against the Israeli Prime Minister.
After becoming mayor, Mamdani clarified that New York City does not have the legal authority to enforce the ICC warrant or order Netanyahu’s arrest. He said such action would fall under federal jurisdiction and not the powers of the city administration.
Mamdani said he continues to support the ICC process and believes Netanyahu should face legal proceedings, but acknowledged that a mayor’s powers are limited by law.
The clarification led to criticism from opponents, who accused him of changing his earlier position. His supporters argued that he was explaining the legal realities after taking office.
