Russian forces carried out a series of overnight missile and drone attacks across Ukraine, killing at least 13 people and injuring around 90 others, according to Ukrainian authorities and reports published on August 9, 2026.
What happened?
The attacks hit several parts of Ukraine, including Kharkiv and Odesa. A Russian missile struck a residential building in Kharkiv, killing civilians and injuring dozens. Ukrainian authorities reported three deaths and 37 injuries in the attack.
In Odesa, Russian strikes damaged port and energy infrastructure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said attacks on the port could affect Ukraine’s agricultural exports and raise wider concerns about global food supplies.
Heavy attacks continue
The latest strikes are part of an intensified Russian aerial campaign involving missiles and drones. Ukrainian officials have said the country needs more air defence interceptors, particularly for defending cities against ballistic missiles.
Russia has also reported Ukrainian drone attacks on its territory. Russian authorities said five people were killed in the Belgorod region and more than 20 were injured. Moscow also claimed that its air defence systems intercepted more than 150 Ukrainian drones.
Both Russia and Ukraine continue to accuse each other of attacks that cause civilian casualties, while each side says it is targeting military or strategic infrastructure.
International concern
The latest escalation comes as international efforts to end the Russia–Ukraine war continue. Pope Leo has renewed calls for an end to the fighting and urged greater protection for civilians.
The continuing attacks are also raising concerns over damage to Ukraine’s ports, energy facilities and agricultural export infrastructure.
