India’s Defence Exports Surge as Country Expands Global Strategic Footprint

Modern Indian defense in action

India is rapidly strengthening its position in the global defence market, marking a significant shift from its long standing status as one of the world’s largest arms importers. Over the past decade, the country’s defence exports have witnessed remarkable growth, reflecting the expansion of domestic manufacturing capabilities and increased international demand for Indian made military equipment.

According to official data, India’s defence exports have risen from around ₹700 crore in FY2013-14 to more than ₹24,000 crore in recent years. The growth has been driven by government initiatives aimed at boosting indigenous defence production and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers.

One of the most notable successes has been the export of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system. The Philippines has already acquired the missile, while countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia have been reported to be exploring defence cooperation and potential purchases of Indian military hardware.

Experts note that defence exports extend beyond the sale of weapons and equipment. Long term agreements often include training, maintenance, logistics support and technology cooperation, helping to strengthen strategic ties between nations.

India’s growing role in the defence sector comes at a time when countries across the Indo Pacific are reassessing their security priorities amid evolving geopolitical dynamics. As regional governments seek to modernize their armed forces and diversify defence partnerships, Indian defence manufacturers are finding new opportunities in international markets.

Industry observers believe that India’s expanding defence footprint could further enhance its strategic influence while contributing to economic growth and technological development. With continued investments in research, innovation and manufacturing, the country is increasingly positioning itself as a reliable supplier of advanced defence systems to partner nations.

The transformation from a major arms importer to an emerging defence exporter is being viewed as one of the most significant developments in India’s defence and strategic landscape in recent years.
