US President Donald Trump has defended the ongoing war with Iran despite his Republican Party suffering a major defeat in the November 3 midterm elections. The Democratic Party has gained control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, ending Republican control of Congress.

Speaking to Fox News and The Wall Street Journal, Trump acknowledged that the Iran conflict played a role in the Republican Party’s election losses. However, he insisted that the military action against Iran was necessary and worth the political cost.

“The Iran thing we had to do, and we continue to do it,” Trump said.

He maintained that the decision to take military action was right and indicated that he would make the same decision again.

Democrats Win Control of Both Chambers

  • The Democratic Party secured a majority in both chambers of the US Congress.
  • In the 435 member House of Representatives, Democrats crossed the 218 seat majority mark, winning more than two dozen competitive seats previously held by Republicans.
  • In the 100 member Senate, Democrats secured at least 53 seats, giving them control of the chamber and reversing the previous Republican majority. Some Senate races were still being counted when the results were reported.
  • The results mark a major setback for Trump, whose party had controlled both chambers before the election.

Iran War and Rising Costs Become Election Issues

  • The war with Iran became one of the major issues during the election campaign. Democratic candidates criticised the administration’s military policy and argued that the conflict had contributed to rising fuel prices and the cost of living.
  • Voters also expressed concerns about economic conditions, tariffs and the direction of the country.
  • Trump acknowledged that the Iran war was one of the factors behind the Republican losses but continued to defend the military operation.

Trump Warns Democrats Against Impeachment

  • Following the Democratic victory, Trump also addressed the possibility of impeachment proceedings against him.
  • He warned Democrats that pursuing impeachment could create political problems for their own party. His remarks came as Democratic lawmakers prepared to take greater control of congressional committees and increase scrutiny of the administration.
  • Democrats now have greater authority to investigate government policies, demand documents, question officials and conduct congressional hearings.

What Does This Mean for Trump?

  • The Democratic victory does not remove Trump from the presidency. He will remain President of the United States, but he will face a Congress controlled by the opposition party.
  • Democrats can use their majorities to investigate administration decisions, challenge policies and influence legislation. The Senate majority also gives them greater control over confirmation votes for presidential appointments.
  • However, Trump retains his presidential veto power. Democrats would need a two-thirds majority in both chambers to override a presidential veto.
  • The election results are expected to bring a new phase of political confrontation in Washington, particularly over the Iran war, economic policies and the administration’s decisions.
