The flood situation in Assam has worsened, with the death toll rising to 95 after six more people lost their lives in the latest wave of flooding. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 1.6 lakh people are currently affected across 14 districts, even as floodwaters have started receding in some areas.
The worst affected districts include Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Dibrugarh, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Jorhat, where thousands of homes remain submerged. Continuous rainfall and overflowing rivers have damaged roads, bridges, embankments and agricultural land, disrupting normal life.
State disaster response teams, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local authorities are carrying out rescue and relief operations. Thousands of displaced residents have been shifted to relief camps, where food, drinking water, medical assistance and other essential supplies are being provided.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been visiting the flood hit districts to review rescue and rehabilitation efforts. The Central Government has also assured full support for ongoing relief and recovery operations.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Assam, warning of more heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the coming days. Authorities have advised people living in low lying and riverbank areas to remain alert and follow evacuation instructions as fresh rainfall could worsen the situation.
The state government has urged citizens to avoid travelling to flood affected areas unless necessary and has appealed for continued cooperation as rescue teams work to assist stranded residents and restore essential services.
