Some Hindutva groups have publicly criticized the Delhi Police over its handling of the recent student protests in the national capital, claiming the police response was “too soft” against demonstrators.
During protests and counter-protests near Jantar Mantar, members of right-wing groups raised slogans and challenged the police, with some reportedly saying, “Make us police for a day,” claiming they could remove the protesters more forcefully. The remarks came amid heightened tensions following the nationwide demonstrations over the NEET paper leak controversy.
According to reports, groups identifying themselves as supporters of Hindutva organizations gathered near the protest site, accusing the student movement of creating unrest. Some activists attempted to confront protesters, while police maintained barricades to keep the two sides apart. Security was increased to prevent clashes.
The Delhi Police have also faced criticism from student organizations, opposition leaders, civil rights groups, and lawyers over their handling of the protests. Critics alleged that police used tear gas, batons, and mass detentions against peaceful demonstrators. They also questioned restrictions such as internet shutdowns and the temporary closure of Metro stations during the march toward Parliament.
Meanwhile, Hindutva activists argued that the police should have acted more aggressively to disperse the protesters. Their “Make us police for a day” remark reflected frustration with what they described as a restrained police response.
