London: More than 200 deaths have been reported to UK medicines regulators following suspected adverse reactions involving popular weight loss injections, alongside more than 158,000 reports of suspected side effects, according to the latest safety monitoring data.
The reports involve widely used medicines such as Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Wegovy (semaglutide) and Saxenda (liraglutide), which are prescribed for weight management and in some cases, type 2 diabetes.
The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has stressed that the reported figures do not establish that the medicines caused the deaths or other adverse reactions. Reports submitted through the Yellow Card system indicate that a patient, healthcare professional or family member suspected a medicine may have contributed to an adverse event.
The number of reported adverse reactions has increased as the use of weight loss injections has expanded. Commonly reported effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and other gastrointestinal symptoms. More serious complications, including acute pancreatitis, have also been reported.
Despite the safety reports, UK regulators continue to state that the benefits of approved GLP-1 medicines outweigh the risks for eligible patients when they are prescribed appropriately and used under medical supervision.
The MHRA has particularly warned people against purchasing weight loss injections from unauthorised websites, social media sellers or other unregulated sources. Such products may be counterfeit, contaminated, incorrectly dosed or contain ingredients that are not listed on the packaging.
Authorities have also urged patients not to increase their dosage without medical advice. The medicines should be taken according to the prescription and dosage instructions provided by a qualified healthcare professional.
The regulator has stepped up action against the illegal supply of weight loss medicines, including seizures of unlicensed products. Officials say patients should obtain these medicines only through legitimate healthcare and pharmacy channels.
People experiencing severe or unusual symptoms while taking weight loss injections are advised to seek medical attention. Patients are also encouraged to report suspected side effects so that regulators can continue monitoring the safety of these medicines.
The latest figures underline the importance of continued safety monitoring as weight loss injections become increasingly popular. However, the reported deaths and adverse reactions should not be interpreted as proof that the medicines directly caused those outcomes.
