A tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile while travelling through the Strait of Hormuz, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
A fire broke out on the vessel following the incident but was later brought under control by emergency crews. All crew members were reported safe. The cause of the incident and the origin of the projectile remain under investigation.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime routes for oil and gas shipments.
Iran Reports Separate Tanker Incident
- The latest incident comes alongside a separate report from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which said it had struck and detained a Togo flagged tanker named Trend.
- Iran alleged that the vessel was attempting to make an unauthorised passage through the Strait of Hormuz and said the tanker caught fire after being targeted.
- However, it has not been established whether the tanker mentioned by the IRGC is the same vessel involved in the incident reported by UKMTO. UKMTO has not publicly attributed the projectile attack to any particular country or group.
Shipping Traffic Declines
- Commercial shipping activity through the Strait has also remained below normal levels amid the security concerns.
- The reduced traffic reflects growing caution among shipping operators using the strategic waterway, where any prolonged disruption could affect energy transportation and international markets.
Why the Strait of Hormuz Matters
- The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and is a major route for global oil and gas shipments.
- Further attacks or restrictions on commercial vessels could increase shipping risks, insurance costs and pressure on global energy supplies.
- For now, the latest projectile incident remains under investigation. Maritime authorities are advising vessels operating in the area to exercise caution.
Business Galaxy: The confirmed information at this stage is that a tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile, a fire was reported and later controlled, and the crew was safe. The source of the attack remains unconfirmed.
