A nationwide student movement that began over alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG 2026 examination has become one of India’s most talked about political issues, dominating discussions on X, Instagram, YouTube and other social media platforms.
The protests were triggered by allegations of examination paper leaks and demands for greater transparency, accountability and reforms in India’s competitive examination system. Demonstrators also called for strict action against those responsible for the alleged irregularities. The movement gained momentum through viral memes, videos and online campaigns, making it one of the largest youth driven digital protest movements in recent years.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the issue in a video message, saying he forgives students who used abusive language against him during the protests. He described them as “Misled children” and said punishment alone would not solve the underlying problems. He urged society to guide young people and focus on resolving their concerns.
The Prime Minister’s remarks sparked strong political reactions. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said students do not need forgiveness but deserve an apology from the government over its handling of the examination controversy. Several opposition leaders also demanded comprehensive reforms to ensure fairness and transparency in competitive examinations.
The protests have already led to major developments. The government announced examination reforms, proposed stricter anti-paper leak measures, and indicated that police cases against many protesters would be withdrawn. The resignation of the Education Minister earlier during the movement was also seen as a significant outcome of the sustained public pressure.
