Hyderabad: In a major crackdown on the illegal sale of prescription medicines, the Special Crime Team of the Central Crime Station (CCS), Hyderabad City, in coordination with Habeeb Nagar Police, apprehended two persons for illegally possessing and selling large quantities of sedative tablets and cough syrups.
The operation was carried out on July 17, 2026, based on credible intelligence. During the raid, police seized 77,700 prescription sedative tablets, including NitraZohm-10, Nitcor-10 and Nitravet-10, along with 170 bottles of Choco+ Cough Syrup. The total value of the seized medicines is estimated at around ₹10 lakh.
Police said six other accused linked to the illegal supply network are currently absconding, and efforts are underway to trace and arrest them.
According to the investigation, the accused allegedly procured the prescription medicines from sources in Bidar without legal authorization and transported them to Hyderabad. The medicines were then sold illegally at inflated prices.
Investigators found that the accused were supplying the sedative tablets and cough syrups to habitual offenders, suspects and members of the public, particularly youngsters, who misused them as intoxicants.
Officials warned that the abuse of such prescription medicines can lead to intoxication, dizziness, drowsiness, impaired coordination, confusion and other serious health complications. Police also noted that misuse of these drugs can contribute to property crimes and violent offences.
Hyderabad City Police urged citizens to purchase medicines only with a valid prescription from registered medical practitioners and to avoid buying medicines from unauthorized sources. The public has also been requested to report any illegal sale, storage, transportation or distribution of prescription medicines and cough syrups to the nearest police station or the concerned authorities.
The Hyderabad City Police reiterated its commitment to taking strict legal action against individuals involved in the illegal trade of prescription medicines and other contraband to safeguard public health and maintain law and order.
