India and Pakistan have summoned each other’s senior diplomats following a deadly border incident in Punjab on October 2, with both countries presenting sharply different accounts of the incident.

The diplomatic exchange followed the deaths of two Pakistani nationals near the International Border in Punjab’s Ferozepur sector, raising fresh concerns over border security and bilateral relations.

India described the deceased individuals as suspected infiltrators who allegedly crossed into Indian territory despite repeated warnings from the Border Security Force (BSF). Pakistan, however, claimed that they were unarmed civilians who had inadvertently crossed the border.

  • On October 3, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned the Chargé d’Affaires of the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi and lodged a strong protest over what it described as continued facilitation of illegal cross border infiltration.
  • India rejected Pakistan’s allegations concerning the October 2 incident, describing them as baseless and motivated.
  • According to the Indian government’s account, three individuals entered Indian territory and continued moving towards the border fence despite multiple warnings from BSF personnel to return to Pakistan.
  • The MEA stated that the BSF was compelled to engage them after they allegedly posed an imminent security threat.
  • India also raised concerns about what it described as repeated cross border movement involving armed narcotics syndicates and urged Pakistan to investigate alleged infiltration and drug smuggling activities.

Pakistan Protests Deaths of Two Nationals

  • Earlier on October 3, Pakistan summoned India’s Charge d’Affaires in Islamabad and lodged a strong protest over the deaths.
  • Pakistan’s Foreign Office maintained that the two individuals were unarmed civilians and alleged that BSF personnel used unjustified lethal force against them.
  • Islamabad rejected India’s characterisation of the deceased as infiltrators and called for an immediate, transparent and credible investigation.
  • Pakistan also sought appropriate legal and disciplinary action against those found responsible.
  • These allegations have been rejected by India.

What Happened at the Punjab Border?

  • The incident occurred on October 2 along the International Border in Punjab.
  • According to Indian officials, three individuals crossed into Indian territory. One reportedly returned to the Pakistani side, while the other two continued towards the Indian border fence despite warnings.
  • The BSF subsequently opened fire, resulting in the deaths of two individuals.
  • Pakistan presented a different account, stating that the deceased were civilians who had accidentally crossed the border.
  • The competing accounts have not been independently reconciled.

India Urges Pakistan to Prevent Further Incidents

India called on Pakistan to respect the sanctity of the International Border, adhere to relevant bilateral arrangements and exercise effective control to prevent unauthorised crossings.

New Delhi also urged Islamabad to take measures to prevent similar incidents from recurring.

The diplomatic exchange highlights continuing security concerns along the India-Pakistan border, particularly regarding alleged infiltration and narcotics related activities.

Diplomatic Tensions Under Watch

  • The latest incident has triggered reciprocal diplomatic protests between the two neighbouring countries.
  • Although the development has raised concerns about bilateral relations, no official announcement of military escalation has been made in the reports reviewed.
  • The situation remains sensitive, with both governments maintaining their respective positions.
