A flydubai passenger aircraft travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday after an incident inside the cockpit left both the captain and co-pilot injured.

The aircraft, flydubai Flight FZ1073, was carrying more than 170 people when the incident occurred during the flight. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 was subsequently diverted to Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk, where it landed safely.

Saudi authorities have launched an investigation, while authorities in the United Arab Emirates are conducting a separate investigation because flydubai is a UAE-registered airline.

What Happened Inside the Cockpit?

  • According to preliminary information reported by the Associated Press, investigators believe the co-pilot assaulted the captain, resulting in injuries to both pilots.
  • Other reports, citing passengers and Israeli officials, have alleged that the co-pilot stabbed the captain and attempted to interfere with the aircraft’s controls.
  • However, flydubai itself has described the incident more cautiously as an “altercation” in the flight deck and has said that the reasons and motives remain subject to a formal investigation.
  • The airline has urged people not to speculate while authorities establish what happened.

Aircraft Diverted to Tabuk

  • During the incident, the aircraft transmitted emergency signals and was diverted toward Saudi Arabia.
  • According to Tabuk airport authorities, air traffic control received a distress call from Flight FZ1073 requesting an emergency landing at approximately 8:44 a.m. local time on September 30.
  • The aircraft landed safely at approximately 9:45 a.m. at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport.
  • Both the captain and co-pilot were taken to hospital for medical treatment.

Passengers and Crew Safe

  • The airline said that all passengers and crew were safe and accounted for following the emergency landing.
  • Off-duty flydubai crew members who were travelling on the aircraft helped secure the plane and assisted in diverting it safely to Tabuk.
  • Passengers were provided assistance at the airport while flydubai arranged replacement aircraft to continue their journey.

Indian Captain Hospitalised

  • The captain involved in the incident has been identified in multiple reports as Indian national Smit Machchhar.
  • The Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia said the injured pilot was receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Tabuk.
  • The embassy said it was following his condition through its officials in Riyadh and the Consulate in Jeddah.

Investigation by Saudi and UAE Authorities

  • Saudi Arabia’s National Transport Safety Center has opened a safety investigation into the emergency landing.
  • The UAE has also initiated an investigation through its relevant authorities. Because the aircraft is registered in the UAE, UAE judicial authorities have jurisdiction over the investigation into the incident.
  • The UAE investigation is expected to examine the circumstances and motives behind the cockpit incident, including whether there was any connection to terrorist activity, prior planning or direction.
  • Authorities have urged the public to rely on official information and avoid unverified claims while the investigation continues.

Claims of an Attempt to Crash the Aircraft

  • Some Israeli officials and passengers have described the incident as an apparent attempt to take control of the aircraft and potentially crash it.
  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the co-pilot appeared to have attacked the captain and attempted to interfere with the aircraft’s controls.
  • However, these are claims made during an ongoing investigation and should not be presented as an established fact until investigators formally determine the circumstances and motive.
  • The airline has so far confirmed an altercation in the cockpit but has not publicly confirmed the motive behind it.

Flight Temporarily Disrupted

  • Following the incident, flydubai arranged replacement aircraft for passengers stranded in Tabuk.
  • The airline also said that flights to and from Israel were being suspended while the investigation continued, according to reports.
  • The incident did not result in serious injuries among passengers, according to available reports.

Investigation Remains Ongoing

  • The incident has raised questions about cockpit security, pilot screening and aviation safety.
  • Authorities from Saudi Arabia and the UAE, along with other agencies involved in the investigation, are expected to examine evidence including flight data, cockpit information and witness accounts.
  • At this stage, the precise sequence of events, motive and whether the incident was deliberately intended to cause the aircraft to crash remain matters for investigators to establish.
