A 67 year old businessman from Surat has alleged that two men gained his trust and stole a bag containing 1.5 kg of gold, ₹1.95 crore in cash and 1.28 lakh UAE dirhams after a Dubai-Mumbai flight.
The incident came to light after the businessman approached Mumbai Police. The Sahar police have registered a case against two men in connection with the alleged theft and cheating.
Gold and Foreign Currency
- According to the complaint, the businessman had travelled to Dubai in connection with plans for a new business opportunity. He had earlier been involved in the garment business in Surat.
- Police said the complainant had purchased two gold bars weighing 1 kg and 500 grams in Dubai. The gold was reportedly valued at around ₹1.95 crore, while the purchase price was stated as about 7,66,589 UAE dirhams.
- The businessman also reportedly carried 1,28,000 UAE dirhams in cash, which he intended to use for paying customs duty in India. The UAE currency was valued at approximately ₹33.35 lakh.
How the Alleged Theft Happened
- According to the FIR details reported by the media, the businessman had become acquainted with a Kerala based man, identified in reports as Mohammad Asif, during his earlier visits to Dubai.
- The complainant alleged that Asif told him about his involvement in gold trading and other businesses and encouraged him to explore a gold related business opportunity in India.
- During the Dubai-Mumbai journey, another man was allegedly travelling on the same flight. The businessman later alleged that the two men gained his confidence and were involved in taking away his bag containing the valuables.
Police Case Registered
- The Sahar police have registered a case based on the businessman’s complaint. Reports identify the accused in the case as Niyas Mohammad Katumadthil and Mohammad Harris Thambuthodi.
- The case includes allegations of cheating and criminal breach of trust, among other offences. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the bag and the whereabouts of the accused and valuables.
- The allegations remain subject to investigation and the accused should be presumed innocent unless proven guilty in accordance with law.
