A fresh political confrontation erupted on Wednesday after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi met a group of student protesters and strongly criticised the Central government over the handling of recent student demonstrations. The issue also triggered heated exchanges in Parliament, leading to disruptions during the Monsoon Session.
Rahul Gandhi expressed solidarity with the students, alleging that they faced police excesses while participating in peaceful protests. He accused the government of trying to suppress young voices instead of addressing their concerns and said students should not be punished for demanding transparency and accountability.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rejected the allegations, accusing Rahul Gandhi of politicising student issues for electoral gains. BJP leaders claimed that the Congress was presenting a misleading narrative and questioned why similar protests in Congress-ruled or allied states had not received the same attention.
The controversy spilled over into Parliament, where Opposition MPs staged protests demanding accountability over the alleged police action against students. Parliamentary proceedings were disrupted as members from both sides exchanged accusations, forcing repeated adjournments.
The student protests, linked to concerns over examinations and youth-related issues, have become a major political flashpoint. While the Opposition says students have the democratic right to protest peacefully, the government maintains that law enforcement acted according to legal procedures and denies allegations of excessive force.
With Parliament continuing to witness frequent disruptions, the issue is expected to remain a key point of confrontation between the government and the Opposition in the coming days.
