Hyderabad: In a move aimed at tightening immigration enforcement, the Hyderabad City Police has relocated and made operational a dedicated detention centre for foreign nationals at Jogipet in Sangareddy district, following directives from the Government of Telangana.
The facility is designed to house foreign nationals involved in violations such as illegal migration, visa overstays, human trafficking and drug related offences. Officials said the relocation is part of a broader effort to streamline detention and deportation processes while ensuring compliance with legal and humanitarian standards.
Background and Data
The detention system was initially set up in 2018 at Basheerbagh in Hyderabad. Since then, authorities have handled 196 foreign detainees, of whom 184 have already been deported.
Currently, 12 detainees 9 men and 3 women from countries including Sudan, Nigeria, Uganda and Cameroon remain in custody, awaiting deportation.
Deportation Process
Deportations are carried out in coordination with central agencies, including the Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs. Officials emphasized that all procedures follow due legal process, with deportations conducted either by air or through designated international border points under proper escort.
New Facility and Future Plans
The Jogipet Transit/Detention Centre is equipped with necessary infrastructure and is functioning under the supervision of senior police officials. Authorities say the facility is designed to ensure secure custody while maintaining humane conditions for detainees.
In addition, the state government has approved the establishment of a permanent Transit Home at Cherlapally Prison, further strengthening the system for handling foreign nationals involved in legal violations.

Officials stated that the upgraded infrastructure reflects the government’s focus on national security, legal compliance and improved management of immigration related cases. The move is expected to enhance coordination between local and central agencies while ensuring that deportation procedures are carried out efficiently and lawfully.
