The US House of Representatives has passed a resolution asking President Donald Trump to withdraw US military forces from Iran unless Congress gives official approval for military action.
The resolution was passed by a 214-208 vote. Four Republican lawmakers joined Democrats in supporting the measure. However, the resolution is mostly symbolic, meaning it does not automatically force the President to withdraw US troops.
The vote comes weeks after US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites increased tensions between the two countries. Many lawmakers argued that under the US Constitution, Congress not the President alone has the authority to approve war.
The Trump administration rejected the resolution, calling it unconstitutional. The White House said the President has the authority to take military action when needed to protect US national security.
A similar resolution was also considered in the US Senate, but it did not receive enough support to move forward. As a result, the House resolution is unlikely to change US military policy at this time.
