Russia and Ukraine have exchanged some of the largest drone attacks of the war, with Moscow claiming its air defenses intercepted more than 450 Ukrainian drones overnight while Ukraine carried out a long-range strike on Russia’s largest oil refinery in Omsk, Siberia.

What happened?

According to Russia’s Ministry of Defence, its air defense systems shot down 452 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions, including over 430 drones aimed at the Moscow region. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said most of the drones were intercepted before reaching the capital, although authorities reported temporary disruptions at several airports.

Ukraine targets Russia’s biggest refinery

At the same time, Ukrainian forces struck the Omsk oil refinery, owned by Gazprom Neft and considered Russia’s largest refinery. The attack reportedly caused a fire and damaged key refining units, forcing the facility to suspend processing operations. No casualties were reported, but fuel trading from the refinery was halted while repairs began.

Ukrainian officials described the strike as one of their deepest attacks inside Russian territory, with the refinery located about 2,700 km from Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised the operation, saying it demonstrated Ukraine’s expanding long range strike capability.

Why the refinery matters

The Omsk refinery processes around 460,000 barrels of oil per day and is one of Russia’s most important fuel production facilities. Damage to the refinery could increase pressure on Russia’s fuel supplies, which have already been strained by repeated Ukrainian attacks on energy infrastructure.

Escalating drone war

The latest exchange highlights the growing use of long-range drones by both sides. Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russian energy infrastructure, while Russia continues large scale missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian cities. The conflict has entered a new phase in which both countries are attempting to weaken each other’s military and economic capabilities through sustained aerial attacks.

Note: Russia’s claim of intercepting 452 drones has been reported by multiple media outlets, but battlefield claims made by either Russia or Ukraine during an active conflict cannot always be independently verified.
