Mumbai: The Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) 2026 has been postponed after a suspected question paper leak surfaced in Thane district just 24 hours before the examination, prompting a police investigation and action by the Maharashtra State Council of Examination (MSCE).
According to officials, Bhiwandi Police acted on confidential information and conducted a raid in Thane district, where they recovered documents containing questions that reportedly matched the TET examination paper. Several individuals were detained and a criminal case has been registered as investigators work to determine the source and extent of the suspected leak.
Following the development, the MSCE announced that the examination, originally scheduled for June 28, would be postponed to protect the transparency and integrity of the recruitment process. A fresh examination date will be announced after the investigation and necessary administrative procedures are completed.
The examination was expected to be conducted at 1,028 centres across Maharashtra, with more than 4.28 lakh candidates registered to appear. The postponement has affected lakhs of aspiring teachers who had completed preparations for the test.
Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and more arrests could follow if additional individuals are found to be involved. Reports indicate that the accused allegedly planned to sell the leaked question paper for around ₹1.5 crore, though the police are continuing to verify all aspects of the case.
The incident has reignited concerns over the security of competitive examinations in Maharashtra. The state government has assured candidates that strict action will be taken against those responsible and that the examination process will be conducted fairly once a new date is announced.
