Iran FM Abbas Araghchi Likely to Attend BRICS Summit in India Amid West Asia Crisis

Iran FM May Attend BRICS Meet in India

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is expected to visit India next week to participate in the upcoming BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting scheduled for May 14-15 in New Delhi. The meeting comes at a highly sensitive time as tensions continue across West Asia following recent military confrontations involving Iran, the United States and regional allies.

According to reports, Iran has informed Indian authorities that Araghchi’s visit remains on the official agenda, although some uncertainty still surrounds his final participation because of the rapidly changing situation in West Asia.

The BRICS meeting will be chaired by India as part of its current leadership role in the bloc. Diplomats are expected to discuss:

  • The Iran-U.S. conflict
  • Security in the Strait of Hormuz
  • Global oil supply concerns
  • Regional ceasefire efforts
  • Expansion of BRICS cooperation

The gathering is also viewed as an important diplomatic platform for Iran as Tehran seeks stronger political and economic coordination with BRICS nations during the ongoing regional crisis.

However, some reports suggest Araghchi may ultimately skip the meeting due to ongoing diplomatic negotiations and security developments in West Asia. In that case, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi could represent Tehran instead.

The BRICS foreign ministers’ summit is expected to include representatives from:

  • Brazil
  • Russia
  • India
  • China
  • South Africa
  • Iran
  • Saudi Arabia
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Egypt
  • Ethiopia
  • Indonesia

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is also expected to attend and hold talks with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

Analysts say the meeting could become one of the most important BRICS diplomatic discussions in recent years because the expanded bloc now includes both Iran and Gulf countries with opposing positions in the West Asia conflict.
