Iranian authorities have announced that the official funeral ceremonies for the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s former Supreme Leader, will begin on July 4 and conclude with his burial on July 9 in the northeastern holy city of Mashhad.
According to the committee overseeing the memorial arrangements, the multi day funeral proceedings will start with public farewell ceremonies at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla in Tehran on July 4 and 5, allowing mourners to pay their final respects.
A formal funeral procession is scheduled to take place in Tehran on July 6, followed by commemorative ceremonies in the holy city of Qom on July 7. The final stage of the funeral will be held in Mashhad on July 9, where Khamenei will be laid to rest at the revered Imam Reza Shrine, one of the holiest sites in Shia Islam.
The announcement marks the first definitive timeline for the state funeral since Khamenei’s death earlier this year. The funeral had initially been expected to take place sooner but was reportedly postponed due to ongoing security concerns and regional instability.
Iranian authorities are preparing for large gatherings across the three host cities, with extensive security and logistical arrangements expected to accommodate mourners from different parts of the country and abroad.
Ayatollah Khamenei served as Iran’s Supreme Leader for more than three decades, making him one of the most influential figures in the country’s modern history. His death marked a significant turning point for the Islamic Republic, triggering a leadership transition during a period of heightened regional tensions.
