The Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC) has taken suo-motu cognizance of reports regarding the death of three newborn infants following a fire at the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of RIMS, Adilabad, on September 21.
According to reports cited by the Commission, an alleged electrical short circuit involving an air-conditioning unit led to fire and dense smoke inside the SNCU, where around 27 newborn and preterm infants were undergoing treatment.
Three infants died, while other babies were reportedly shifted to other wards and nearby hospitals after experiencing smoke-related breathing difficulties.
The TGHRC has sought a detailed report from the Principal Secretary, Health, Medical and Family Welfare Department, covering the cause of the incident, fire-safety and maintenance arrangements, rescue and treatment measures, and findings of any inquiry.
The matter has been posted for further consideration on October 27, 2026.
