Assam is facing a serious flood situation after heavy monsoon rains caused rivers to rise and flood large parts of the state.
At the peak of the current flood crisis, more than 1 million people were affected across Assam. Thousands of families were forced to leave their homes as floodwaters entered villages and residential areas.
Death toll reaches 98
The flood situation has also caused a major loss of life. As of August 8, the death toll in Assam had risen to 98.
The latest reports say around 1.55 lakh people are still affected across 13 districts, showing that the situation remains serious even though the number of affected people has come down from earlier levels.
Villages and homes damaged
- Floodwaters have damaged Homes, Roads, Farmland and other infrastructure.
- Earlier during the crisis, more than 2,200 villages were affected, while thousands of houses were either completely or partially damaged.
- The flooding has also affected people’s livelihoods, particularly farmers and families who depend on agriculture and livestock.
Relief and rescue operations continue
- Government agencies and rescue teams have been working in the affected areas. Relief camps have been opened for people who had to leave their homes.
- Authorities are continuing to provide food, shelter and other essential assistance to affected families.
- Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also visited flood affected areas to review the situation and relief work.
- The state government has announced a door to door survey from August 9 to assess the damage and identify families who need assistance.
Situation slowly improves, but danger remains
Although floodwaters have started to recede in several areas, many families are still dealing with damaged homes, lost crops and disrupted daily life.
Officials are continuing to monitor rivers and weather conditions because further heavy rainfall could worsen the situation.
