The Central Government has clarified that E20 petrol a fuel blend containing 20% ethanol and 80% petrol is safe for use in most petrol powered vehicles, although owners of older vehicles may notice a slight reduction in fuel efficiency.
The clarification comes as India continues expanding its ethanol blending programme to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, lower carbon emissions and support domestic sugarcane and grain farmers.
According to the government, vehicles manufactured in recent years that are designed or certified as E20 compatible can use the fuel without any modifications. However, some older petrol vehicles that were not originally designed for higher ethanol blends may experience a small drop in mileage because ethanol contains less energy per litre than petrol.
Officials stated that while fuel efficiency may decrease marginally in older vehicles, E20 petrol does not pose a significant risk to engines that are approved for its use. Vehicle owners are advised to check their owner’s manual or consult the manufacturer to confirm whether their vehicle is E20 compatible.
The government also noted that the nationwide rollout of E20 fuel is part of India’s long term clean energy strategy. The programme is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, strengthen energy security and provide additional income opportunities for the agricultural sector through increased ethanol production.
Automobile manufacturers have been introducing E20 compatible vehicles in line with government guidelines and the transition is expected to continue as fuel infrastructure expands across the country.
