TMC Alleges BJP Is Trying to Impose Vegetarianism Mid Day Mea

Kolkata: A fresh political controversy has erupted in West Bengal after Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien accused the BJP government of attempting to “impose vegetarianism” on the state by allegedly removing eggs from school mid-day meals. The remarks have intensified an ongoing debate over food choices, nutrition and cultural identity in Bengal.

The controversy began after reports emerged that eggs could be dropped from the menu of certain school meal programs. Reacting strongly, O’Brien claimed that children were being deprived of an important source of nutrition and accused the BJP government of pushing a vegetarian agenda. He argued that eggs play a vital role in the diets of many students and should not be removed from welfare schemes.

In a post on social media, O’Brien said that while eggs had become a political issue, children should not suffer nutritional losses as a result. He alleged that the move reflected an attempt to impose dietary preferences on a state where fish, eggs and non-vegetarian food form an important part of everyday culture and cuisine.

The issue has gained additional attention because of reports that the menu for some school meal programs could be managed with the involvement of ISKCON. However, ISKCON has reportedly denied that any final decision has been taken regarding changes to the menu and stated that an official announcement would be made after consultations are completed.

The BJP has not officially announced any statewide policy banning eggs in school meals. The debate therefore remains centered on reports and political allegations rather than a formally declared government decision.

The row comes months after food habits became a major issue during the West Bengal Assembly election campaign, when questions surrounding fish, meat and vegetarianism emerged as political talking points between the BJP and TMC. Food choices are considered a sensitive cultural issue in Bengal, where fish and egg consumption are deeply linked to local traditions and identity.

As the debate continues, opposition leaders are demanding clarity from the state government regarding the future of eggs in school nutrition programs, while supporters of the existing scheme argue that nutritional needs should remain the primary consideration in decisions affecting children.
