California AG Rob Bonta, Santa Clara County Sue Trump Administration Over Federal Policies

California AG Rob Bonta

California Attorney General Rob Bonta and officials from Santa Clara County have announced a new legal challenge against the Trump administration, arguing that recent federal actions unlawfully threaten funding and local authority.

According to California officials, the lawsuit seeks to block federal policies that they say attempt to force states and local governments to comply with immigration related demands by attaching new conditions to federal grants and funding. Santa Clara County leaders contend that such measures could jeopardize essential services, including public safety programs, healthcare initiatives and community support projects.

Attorney General Rob Bonta said the administration was exceeding its constitutional authority by using federal funds as leverage to pressure local governments into adopting policies aligned with its immigration agenda. He argued that states and counties have the right to determine how to allocate local law enforcement resources and that the federal government cannot impose conditions that were not authorized by Congress.

Santa Clara officials emphasized that the county has previously challenged similar actions in court and maintained that local governments should not be forced to choose between providing critical services and adhering to federal policy demands.

The Trump administration has defended its approach, stating that federal funds should support jurisdictions that cooperate with federal immigration enforcement efforts and comply with national laws. Administration officials argue that the measures are intended to enhance public safety and ensure accountability in the use of taxpayer money.

The lawsuit is the latest in a series of legal battles between California and the Trump administration. Since President Donald Trump returned to office, California has filed or joined numerous lawsuits challenging federal actions on issues ranging from immigration and environmental regulations to election policies and federal funding restrictions.

The case is expected to proceed through the federal court system, where judges will determine whether the administration’s funding conditions are lawful and constitutional. The outcome could have significant implications for the balance of power between the federal government and states that maintain policies limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
