Yashasvi Jaiswal Replaces Injured Virat Kohli for Afghanistan ODI Series

Yashasvi Jaiswal Replaces Injured Virat Kohli

India’s preparations for the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan have suffered a setback, with veteran batter Virat Kohli ruled out due to a hamstring injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named Yashasvi Jaiswal as Kohli’s replacement for the three match series.

Kohli reportedly sustained the injury during the IPL 2026 final, where he played a match winning unbeaten knock to help Royal Challengers Bengaluru secure the title against Gujarat Titans. Despite initial hopes of a quick recovery, the selectors decided not to risk the experienced batter for the Afghanistan series.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said the exact timeline for Kohli’s recovery remains uncertain, although there is optimism that he could return in time for India’s ODI tour of England in July.

“With Virat, it’s been less than a week since he injured himself in the IPL final. We don’t have a clear timeline yet, but he could be fit for the England series,” Agarkar said.

The absence of Kohli opens the door for Yashasvi Jaiswal, one of India’s most promising young batters. While Jaiswal has already established himself in Test cricket, he has had limited opportunities in the ODI format and will now have a chance to strengthen his case ahead of future major tournaments.

India and Afghanistan are scheduled to play a three match ODI series on June 14, 17 and 20, with the contests expected to provide valuable preparation as the team begins building toward upcoming international assignments.

Kohli, who now plays only ODI cricket after retiring from Tests and T20 Internationals, remains a key figure in India’s plans. Team management will be hoping that the injury proves to be minor and that the former captain can return to full fitness soon.
