Hyderabad: In a major digital shift, residents of Telangana can now self enumerate their households online as part of India’s upcoming Census 2026-27, marking the first time such a facility is available in the state.
🔹 What is happening?
- The Census House Listing phase (Phase-1) has begun, allowing people to fill their household details online before officials visit.
- Telangana’s self enumeration window is from April 26 to May 10, 2026.
- This is part of India’s first fully digital census, replacing traditional paper based methods.
🔹 How self-enumeration works
- Residents can log in to the official census portal and:
- Register using a mobile number (OTP verification)
- Enter household details, amenities, and family members
- Mark their house on a digital map
- After submission, a unique Census ID is generated for verification.
- Census officials will still visit homes later (May 11 June 9) to verify the data.
🔹 New rule: What counts as a “Household”?
- People sharing a common kitchen will be counted as one household—even if unrelated.
- Those living together but not sharing meals will be counted separately.
🔹 Why this matters
- ✔ Faster and more accurate data collection
- ✔ Reduces workload on field enumerators
- ✔ Allows citizens to fill details at their convenience
- ✔ Helps government planning, welfare schemes, and policy decisions
🔹 Important points
- Self enumeration is optional, not mandatory
- Data is confidential under the Census Act and won’t affect welfare benefits
- Those who don’t register online will still be covered through door to door surveys
🔹 Bigger picture
- Census 2026-27 will be conducted in two phases:
- Phase 1: House listing (2026)
- Phase 2: Population data collection (February 2027)
- It will also include detailed socio-economic and caste data, making it one of the most comprehensive exercises ever.
Short Summary
Telangana residents can now fill census details online from home between April 26 and May 10, 2026. This digital self enumeration is part of India’s first fully online census, aimed at improving efficiency, accuracy and public participation.
