Senior Haryana cadre IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar was found dead at his residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh. Preliminary reports indicate that the officer died by suicide, reportedly using his service revolver in a soundproof basement of his home.
Police sources said the gunshot was not heard by anyone in the house due to the soundproofing. His daughter reportedly discovered his body later in the evening.
A nine page document believed to have been written by Kumar was found at the scene. Investigators are examining its contents. Some reports mention that the document names several serving and retired IPS officers, but officials have not confirmed its full contents or motive.
Kumar’s wife, Amneet P. Kumar, an IAS officer, was away in Japan on official duty when the incident occurred.
Officials said Kumar had been recently posted as the head of the Police Training Centre in Sunaria and was scheduled to take charge the following day.
The exact reason for his decision remains under investigation. Police have seized forensic evidence from the site and are questioning those who were present at the home at the time.
Colleagues described Y. Puran Kumar as a dedicated and outspoken officer, known for his professionalism and integrity. He had previously raised concerns about irregularities and caste bias within the police department, though it is unclear whether these issues are related to the incident.
Authorities have initiated a full inquiry into the case, and the official statement from Haryana Police is awaited.
