A devastating flash flood and landslide disaster along the Nepal-Tibet border has triggered a massive rescue operation, with hundreds of people dead or missing and a large number of Indian nationals among those unaccounted for.
According to the latest reports on August 27, at least 359 people have died across Nepal and Tibet, while more than 1,300 people remain missing. The figures are still changing as authorities verify reports from remote and badly damaged areas.
288 Indians reported missing
- India’s Ministry of External Affairs said 288 Indian nationals remain unaccounted for. They include tourists, pilgrims and people working in the affected region.
- Among those missing are 73 Indians associated with the Trishuli One hydropower project.
- Many Indian nationals were travelling through the region as part of the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage, one of the major routes affected by the disaster.
- Authorities have cautioned that the missing-person figures are still being verified as rescue teams reach previously inaccessible areas.
What caused the disaster?
- The catastrophe struck in the mountainous region around the Trishuli and Bhote Koshi rivers, close to Nepal’s border with Tibet.
- Initial reports raised the possibility of an earthquake, but subsequent assessments pointed toward a glacial collapse that triggered a huge debris flow and flash flood.
- Massive quantities of water, mud, rocks and debris swept through settlements and infrastructure, destroying roads and bridges and leaving several communities isolated.
Rescue operations underway
- Nepalese authorities are using helicopters, emergency personnel and heavy equipment to search for survivors and recover victims.
- Entire communities have been cut off because roads and bridges have been washed away. More than 1,200 people have reportedly been displaced from affected villages.
- The disaster has also severely disrupted the route connecting Kathmandu with Lhasa, an important corridor for tourism, pilgrimage and trade.
India steps up assistance
- India has offered humanitarian assistance to Nepal and is working to locate its citizens affected by the disaster.

Further flooding remains a concern
