UK PM Keir Starmer Announces Resignation

London: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has officially announced that he will resign as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party, ending weeks of speculation about his political future. Starmer said he would remain in office during a transition period to ensure an “orderly transfer of power” until a new Labour leader is chosen.

The announcement comes less than two years after Starmer led the Labour Party to a landslide general election victory in 2024. However, his government has faced growing pressure in recent months amid declining public approval ratings, electoral setbacks and increasing criticism from within his own party.

In a statement delivered on Monday, Starmer acknowledged that many Labour MPs no longer believed he was the best person to lead the party into the next general election. He said he accepted that judgment and would work to ensure a smooth leadership transition while maintaining stability in government.

Attention has now shifted to who will succeed him. The leading contender is Andy Burnham, whose recent political momentum has fuelled calls for change within Labour. If no serious challenger emerges, a new Labour leader and prime minister could be in place by mid-July. A contested leadership election could extend the process until late August.

Financial markets reacted cautiously to the news. The British pound weakened slightly, while government bond markets remained relatively stable, indicating that investors are waiting for more clarity on the direction of the next government.

Starmer’s departure means Britain could soon have its seventh prime minister in a decade, underlining the political volatility that has followed the Brexit era. Analysts say the next Labour leader will face significant challenges, including sluggish economic growth, fiscal constraints, and rebuilding public confidence ahead of the next national election.
