A catastrophic flash flood disaster along Nepal’s northern border with Tibet has left hundreds dead and thousands missing, triggering a major search and rescue operation.
The disaster struck on August 26 when a huge surge of water, ice, mud and rocks swept through the Bhote Koshi river system in Rasuwa district, close to the Nepal-China border. Entire settlements, roads, bridges and infrastructure were damaged or washed away.
Death toll and missing people
- The casualty figures remain fluid as rescue teams continue recovering bodies from the debris.
- Nepal authorities have reported hundreds of deaths, while the number of missing people has risen into the thousands. More than 3,700 people have reportedly been rescued or evacuated, including through helicopter operations.
- Indian nationals are also among those reported missing or stranded in the affected region.
What caused the disaster?
- The flooding appears to have been associated with a major high altitude geological event involving a landslide and the sudden release of a huge volume of water.
- The resulting surge carried ice, rocks, mud and other debris downstream, causing widespread destruction. Authorities and scientists are continuing to assess the precise sequence of events.
Rescue operation faces major challenges
- Nepal has mobilised personnel from the Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police.
- Rescue teams are searching through thick mud and debris while helicopters are being used to evacuate stranded people and deliver food, medicines and other emergency supplies.
- Destroyed roads and bridges have made access to several affected areas extremely difficult.
- A particularly serious situation has been reported at the Upper Trishuli-1 hydropower project, where workers were trapped inside a mud-filled tunnel.
India sends humanitarian assistance
- India has stepped up humanitarian assistance to flood hit Nepal.
- India has sent additional relief supplies along with doctors, paramedics and a reconnaissance team to assess rescue and medical requirements.
- The relief material includes food supplies, portable generators, water purification tablets and other emergency items.
