India is preparing to host the Fourth India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS-IV) in New Delhi later this month, marking the first such high level gathering between India and African nations in more than a decade. The summit is expected to become one of India’s biggest diplomatic events of 2026, with leaders and representatives from across Africa scheduled to participate.
The summit will focus on expanding trade, investment, technology cooperation, infrastructure development and diplomatic engagement between India and African countries. Officials say the event is aimed at strengthening India’s role in Africa at a time of growing global competition for influence on the continent.
Summit After a Decade
The India-Africa Forum Summit was first launched in 2008 as a platform to deepen cooperation between India and African nations. The last summit was held in 2015, making this year’s meeting the first in over ten years.
According to reports, the 2026 summit is expected to take place in the final week of May in New Delhi, with participation from more than 40 African countries. Preparations are already underway across the capital, including large scale infrastructure and beautification work in key diplomatic areas.
Focus Areas of the Summit
Government officials and policy experts say the summit agenda will include:
- Expansion of bilateral trade and investment
- Digital infrastructure and technology partnerships
- Energy, mining and natural resource cooperation
- Defence and maritime security collaboration
- Healthcare and pharmaceutical partnerships
- Education and skill development programs
- Climate action and sustainable development initiatives
The summit’s broader theme is expected to revolve around “strategic partnership, innovation, resilience and inclusive transformation.”
India’s Growing Interest in Africa
Africa has become increasingly important for India due to its fast growing population, natural resources and expanding markets. Analysts say India is seeking stronger economic and geopolitical ties with African countries as global powers compete for influence in the region.
Trade between India and African nations has grown significantly over the past decade, with India investing heavily in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, energy, infrastructure, agriculture, and digital services. Reports indicate India’s cumulative investments in Africa have crossed $80 billion.
India has also expanded its diplomatic presence in Africa by opening new embassies and increasing development assistance programs across the continent.
Countering Global Competition
Experts believe the summit also carries strategic importance because China has established a dominant economic presence in Africa through large infrastructure investments and trade initiatives. India is expected to present itself as a development partner focused on mutual growth, technology sharing and South South cooperation.
The upcoming summit is likely to include discussions on supply chains, critical minerals, maritime security in the Indian Ocean and cooperation in emerging technologies.
Preparations in New Delhi
Authorities in New Delhi have started extensive preparations ahead of the summit. Civic agencies are improving roads, public spaces, lighting, and landscaping in major diplomatic zones to welcome visiting delegations.
Officials expect the India-Africa Forum Summit 2026 to strengthen India’s diplomatic outreach across the Global South and open new opportunities for trade, investment and strategic cooperation in the coming years.
