Challenge to Nitin Gadkari Over E20 Fuel Sparks Fresh Debate

Challenge to Nitin Gadkari Over E20 Fuel

A public challenge directed at Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has reignited the debate over the use of E20 (20% ethanol blended) petrol in India.

In a statement widely shared on social media, the speaker challenged Gadkari to obtain written assurances from both automobile manufacturers and insurance companies stating that E20 fuel does not cause problems to vehicles. The statement alleged that if E20 is completely safe, automakers and insurers should be willing to guarantee that it will not lead to engine damage, reduced performance, or insurance claim disputes.

The remarks come amid ongoing discussions over India’s ethanol blending programme. The government has promoted E20 fuel as part of its strategy to reduce crude oil imports, lower carbon emissions and support domestic ethanol production. Since 2025, several automakers have introduced vehicles designed to be compatible with E20 fuel.

However, some vehicle owners and mechanics have reported concerns such as fuel system corrosion, clogged fuel lines, reduced fuel efficiency and premature wear of certain engine components, particularly in older vehicles not originally designed for higher ethanol blends. Experts note that while ethanol can affect some materials in older fuel systems, there is no conclusive evidence that E20 fuel alone is responsible for all reported mechanical issues.

Automobile manufacturers generally advise owners to use the type of fuel recommended for their specific vehicle model. Newer E20 compatible vehicles are engineered to operate safely on E20 fuel, while owners of older vehicles are encouraged to follow manufacturer guidance before regularly using higher ethanol blends.

Neither the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways nor the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has officially responded to the latest challenge. Similarly, no automobile industry body or insurance association has issued a joint statement guaranteeing that E20 fuel causes no vehicle-related problems.

The debate continues as India expands its ethanol blending programme, with supporters highlighting environmental and energy security benefits, while critics seek greater transparency regarding long term effects on vehicles and consumer protections.
