The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), in coordination with the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Trichy Customs, has foiled an alleged wildlife smuggling attempt at Trichy International Airport in Tamil Nadu, recovering 45 live reptiles and arresting two Indian passengers.

According to a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release dated October 28, the operation was conducted on October 26, following specific intelligence about the suspected smuggling of wildlife into India.

The two passengers were arriving from Bangkok via Colombo when DRI officers intercepted them for examination. A detailed search of their baggage led to the recovery of live reptiles concealed inside 27 food packets. The animals were reportedly found in a sedated condition.

Five Types of Reptiles Recovered

The recovered reptiles included:

  • 23 Corn Snakes
  • 16 Ball Pythons
  • 5 Argentine Black and White Tegus
  • 1 Snow White Iguana

In total, 45 live reptiles were recovered from the passengers baggage.

The reptiles were seized and the two passengers were arrested by AIU, Trichy, under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.

The recovered wildlife was subsequently handed over to AIU, Trichy, for further necessary action.

Intelligence-Led Operation Targets Wildlife Trafficking

  • The DRI stated that the interception highlights its continued efforts to combat wildlife trafficking through intelligence-led operations and coordination with Customs authorities.
  • The use of concealed food packets to transport live reptiles, reportedly in a sedated condition, highlights the methods allegedly used to move wildlife across international borders.
  • Wildlife trafficking poses risks to animal welfare and biodiversity and can involve the illegal movement of protected or regulated species. The legal status of individual species and any applicable wildlife related offences depend on the relevant laws and investigation findings.
  • Further action in the case will be taken by the concerned authorities under applicable provisions of law.
