Spread the love

The National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management, Kundli (NIFTEM-K), hosted Hack the Fork, a 24 hour hackathon focused on using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address real world challenges in the alternative protein industry.

The event was inaugurated on October 24 by Alice Pjie, Director of Hack the Fork and concluded on October 25, with participating teams presenting their innovative solutions before an expert jury.

Organised by the France based non-profit initiative Hack the Fork in collaboration with NIFTEM-K, the event aimed to bring together students, researchers and technology enthusiasts to develop practical solutions for a more sustainable food system.

22 Teams from 10 States Participate

  • According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the hackathon received applications from more than 85 teams, of which 25 were shortlisted for the final round. A total of 22 teams, comprising more than 90 participants from 10 states, took part in the event.
  • Participants represented different academic disciplines and institutions, including Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and the University of Delhi.
  • The challenge encouraged participants to explore how AI could improve food production, nutritional quality, food safety and waste reduction.

Focus on AI and Alternative Proteins

The hackathon focused on applying AI to the growing alternative protein sector, which includes plant-based foods and fermentation based technologies.

The key areas of exploration included:

  • Developing innovative plant based food products.
  • Improving nutritional quality through AI based solutions.
  • Strengthening food safety and quality management.
  • Making food production more sustainable and efficient.
  • Reducing food waste and supporting resilient food systems.

These areas are gaining importance as the food industry explores new technologies to improve production efficiency and address sustainability challenges.

NIFTEM-K Highlights Innovation and Entrepreneurship

  • Dr. Harinder Singh Oberoi, Director of NIFTEM-K, highlighted the importance of the initiative in encouraging innovation and strengthening India’s food ecosystem.
  • He expressed confidence that the hackathon would promote creative thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration and technology driven solutions for the food processing sector.
  • The event was coordinated by Dr. Vimal Pant, Professor at NIFTEM-K and CEO of NTIBIF. A panel of mentors from the Good Food Institute India, IIIT Sonepat and the University of Delhi guided participants in refining their ideas and developing practical solutions.

₹1.5 Lakh in Prizes and Startup Opportunities

  • The participating teams competed for prizes worth ₹1.5 lakh, along with opportunities to enter NIFTEM-K’s Startup Incubation Programme.
  • The initiative highlighted the potential of combining artificial intelligence, food technology and entrepreneurship to develop solutions for emerging challenges in the food industry.

What This Means for India’s Food Technology Sector

  • The hackathon represents an effort to connect young talent with real world challenges in food innovation. AI based research and product development could help improve nutritional planning, food safety, production efficiency and waste management.
  • The next important step will be turning promising ideas developed during such events into practical products and technologies that can be adopted by food businesses and benefit consumers.

Business Galaxy Perspective: Initiatives that bring together students, researchers and industry experts can help strengthen India’s innovation ecosystem. The long term impact will depend on whether the ideas developed through these challenges progress into viable technologies, startups and sustainable food solutions.
