Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced C$100 million in new assistance for Palestinians, including humanitarian aid and support for peace and security capacity building.
Of the total package, C$80 million will be allocated for humanitarian assistance to help address urgent needs among Palestinians. Another C$20 million will support peace and security capacity building efforts.
The security related funding includes support for a multi year programme to help train Palestinian police in the West Bank. Canadian officials have indicated that similar training could be extended to Gaza when security conditions allow.
Carney made the announcement during Canada’s engagement at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The Canadian government has said its assistance is intended to support Palestinian civilians while contributing to efforts aimed at peace and regional security.
Carney has also reiterated Canada’s support for a two state solution, with Israel and a future Palestinian state living alongside each other in peace and security.
The latest announcement adds to Canada’s humanitarian assistance for Palestinians since the war between Israel and Hamas began in October 2023.
The new funding combines immediate humanitarian assistance with longer term support for peace, security and Palestinian institutional capacity.
