Mumbai on 11 July 2026 observed the 20th anniversary of the 2006 Mumbai suburban train bombings, paying tribute to the 189 people who lost their lives and more than 800 others who were injured in one of India’s deadliest terror attacks.

On 11 July 2006, seven powerful bombs exploded within 11 minutes on crowded Western Railway local trains during the evening rush hour between 6:24 pm and 6:35 pm. The coordinated blasts targeted first class compartments on trains travelling through stations including Matunga Road, Mahim Junction, Bandra, Khar Road, Jogeshwari, Borivali and Mira Road.

Memorial ceremonies were held across Mumbai, where families of the victims, survivors, railway officials, police personnel and government representatives gathered to pay floral tributes and observe moments of silence. Several organizations also conducted blood donation drives and remembrance events to honor those who lost their lives.

Security was heightened across Mumbai’s railway network on the anniversary, with additional police deployment and surveillance at major railway stations to ensure public safety.

The 7/11 attacks remain one of the most significant terror incidents in India’s history and led to major improvements in railway security, surveillance systems, emergency response mechanisms and anti terror preparedness.
