Damascus: At least six people were killed and 22 others injured after an explosion ripped through a crowded cafe in central Damascus on Thursday, according to Syrian health authorities. Emergency services rushed to the scene as security forces launched an investigation into the incident.
The blast occurred at a café on Al-Nasr Street in the Al-Marjah (Al-Hijaz) area, near the Palace of Justice, one of the Syrian capital’s busiest government districts. Officials said the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) planted inside the café.
Ambulances transported the injured to nearby hospitals while security personnel cordoned off the area to assist rescue operations and collect evidence. Footage from the scene showed extensive damage inside the cafe, with shattered furniture, debris scattered across the floor and emergency workers searching for survivors.
Syrian authorities have not identified those responsible for the attack, and no group has claimed responsibility. Investigators are reviewing surveillance camera footage from the area as part of the ongoing inquiry. Officials have said further details will be released once the investigation progresses.
The bombing comes as Syria’s transitional government continues efforts to strengthen security following years of conflict. Although violence has declined significantly since the end of major fighting, sporadic bombings and attacks continue to pose challenges to stability in parts of the country.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm while security agencies continue their investigation into one of the deadliest attacks reported in Damascus in recent months.
