John Bolton Pleads Guilty to Classified Documents Charge

John Bolton Pleads Guilty

Former U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton has pleaded guilty to one of 18 criminal charges in a federal classified documents case, marking a significant development in a high-profile national security prosecution.

Bolton entered the guilty plea in a federal court as part of a plea agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice. Under the agreement, prosecutors will recommend a sentence of no more than five years in prison, although the final decision rests with the judge.

As part of the plea deal, Bolton also agreed to pay a $2.25 million fine, complete up to 100 hours of community service, cooperate with intelligence officials, and forfeit his federal government pension. His sentencing has been scheduled for October 28, 2026.

Background of the Case

Bolton was originally indicted in October 2025 on 18 felony counts related to the alleged mishandling of classified national security information after leaving government service.

According to prosecutors, Bolton retained highly classified documents and notes and improperly shared sensitive national security information while preparing his 2020 memoir, The Room Where It Happened. Investigators also alleged that some classified material was stored using insecure methods, increasing the risk of unauthorized access.

The plea agreement resolves one of the charges, while the remaining counts are expected to be dismissed under the terms of the agreement.

Political Significance

Bolton served as National Security Advisor during President Donald Trump’s first administration before the two had a public split in 2019. Since leaving office, Bolton has become one of Trump’s most prominent Republican critics.

The case has drawn widespread political attention, with supporters arguing it demonstrates accountability for mishandling classified information, while critics debate whether the prosecution reflects broader political tensions surrounding former senior government officials.

What Happens Next?

Bolton remains free pending sentencing. The judge will decide whether to accept the plea agreement and determine the final sentence. If approved, Bolton could face up to five years in federal prison, along with the financial penalty and other conditions outlined in the agreement.

The sentencing hearing is scheduled for October 28, 2026, when the court will determine the final punishment.
