Customs authorities are continuing their investigation into the seizure of 24 foreign origin gold biscuits worth ₹4.27 crore that were recovered from an IndiGo flight arriving from Dubai at Ahmedabad airport.
The gold, weighing 2,799.3 grams, was discovered hidden inside a speaker box located in the aircraft’s front lavatory during a detailed inspection conducted with the assistance of aircraft engineers. The seizure was made from IndiGo flight 6E-1478, which landed in Ahmedabad on June 12.
Latest Update
As of now, no passenger or crew member has claimed ownership of the seized gold and no arrests have been reported in connection with the case.
Customs officials are examining CCTV footage, passenger details, aircraft service records and other evidence to identify those responsible for concealing the gold inside the aircraft. Authorities are also investigating whether the case is linked to a larger smuggling network operating on international routes.
The seized gold has been confiscated under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962 and further investigation is underway.
How Do Such Activities Affect India?
Gold smuggling has wider implications beyond a single seizure.
➤ Loss of Government Revenue: Smuggled gold enters the country without payment of customs duties, resulting in a direct loss to the exchequer.
➤ Growth of Illegal Networks: Smuggling operations often involve organised criminal groups that use sophisticated methods to evade detection.
➤ Threat to Aviation Security: Concealing contraband inside aircraft components raises concerns about airport and airline security systems.
➤ Distortion of the Formal Market: Illegal gold trade can affect legitimate importers, jewellers and businesses that comply with tax regulations.
➤ Increased Enforcement Costs: Authorities are forced to allocate additional resources towards surveillance, intelligence gathering, and investigations to combat smuggling.
Officials have reiterated their commitment to strengthening checks at airports and preventing the misuse of international flight routes for illegal activities.
