India Successfully Tests Advanced Agni Missile With MIRV Technology

India successfully tested an advanced Agni missile

India has successfully conducted a major test of an advanced Agni missile equipped with MIRV (Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicle) technology, marking another significant milestone in the country’s strategic defence capabilities.

The missile test was carried out from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha under the supervision of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Officials confirmed that the mission achieved all planned objectives successfully.

MIRV technology allows a single ballistic missile to carry multiple nuclear capable warheads that can independently strike different targets. Defence experts say this capability significantly strengthens India’s strategic deterrence and places the country among a limited group of nations possessing advanced MIRV systems.

According to defence officials, the advanced Agni missile demonstrated high accuracy, improved navigation systems, and the ability to deploy multiple warheads during the trial. The successful test is being viewed as an important development in India’s long range missile programme.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the scientists and engineers involved in the mission, calling the achievement a major boost to India’s defence preparedness and indigenous military technology. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also congratulated the DRDO teams for the successful trial.

India first publicly demonstrated MIRV capability during “Mission Divyastra” in 2024 using the Agni-V missile platform. The latest test is believed to further validate and strengthen the operational readiness of the technology.

The Agni series forms a key part of India’s strategic missile arsenal and is designed to provide long-range deterrence capabilities. The advanced Agni missile tested during the mission is capable of covering intercontinental distances and can carry multiple warheads toward separate targets within a single launch.

Defence analysts say MIRV capability enhances survivability and penetration against advanced missile defence systems because several warheads can be released from one missile during flight. Experts believe the successful trial further strengthens India’s position as a major military power in the region.

The test comes at a time when several countries are modernizing their missile and strategic defence systems amid rising geopolitical tensions worldwide. Indian officials, however, maintain that the country’s missile programme is focused on maintaining credible minimum deterrence and national security.

The successful Agni MIRV test is now being viewed as one of India’s most important strategic defence achievements in recent years.
