UK health authorities are preparing to quarantine passengers returning from the cruise ship MV Hondius after a deadly hantavirus outbreak linked to the vessel raised international concern.
Several passengers reportedly became ill during the voyage, with symptoms including fever, breathing problems, pneumonia, fatigue and respiratory distress. Multiple deaths have also been reported. British passengers are expected to undergo medical screening and precautionary isolation at Arrowe Park Hospital after returning to the UK.
Health officials believe the outbreak may involve the Andes strain of hantavirus, a rare variant that can spread through close human contact. Most hantavirus infections are usually caused by exposure to infected rodents or their waste.
How Dangerous Is Hantavirus?
Health experts say hantavirus can become very serious if it affects the lungs and breathing system. Severe cases may lead to respiratory failure and can be life-threatening without early medical treatment.
However, officials stress that the virus does not spread as easily as COVID-19, and the overall public health risk remains low at this stage.
Safety Measures and Protection
Experts advise people to follow these precautions:
➤ Avoid contact with rodents and rodent droppings.
➤ Maintain proper hygiene and wash hands regularly.
➤ Wear masks and gloves while cleaning dusty or contaminated areas.
➤ Avoid close contact with anyone showing severe flu like symptoms after recent travel.
➤ Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms such as fever, breathing difficulty or chest pain appear.
Authorities are continuing investigations and monitoring passengers connected to the outbreak as precautionary health measures remain in place.
