Nizam’s Grandson Criticises MP’s Remarks on Renaming Nizamabad

A political controversy has emerged in Telangana after a proposal to rename Nizamabad sparked sharp reactions from historical and political circles in Hyderabad.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Dharmapuri Arvind suggested that the city and district could be renamed “Indur” if his party comes to power in the state, citing what he described as its historical name. The remarks triggered criticism from multiple quarters.

Reacting strongly, Nawab Najaf Ali Khan, grandson of the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad Mir Osman Ali Khan, condemned the statement, calling it historically inaccurate and inappropriate. He said invoking his grandfather’s name in contemporary political debates was unjustified and amounted to distorting history for political purposes.

Najaf Ali Khan defended the legacy of the Nizam, stating that he was known for contributions to Administration, Infrastructure, Education and Healthcare and for maintaining social harmony across communities. He said these contributions were well documented and should not be misrepresented.

The proposal also drew criticism from opposition parties, which accused the MP of focusing on symbolic issues such as renaming places instead of addressing development concerns and public welfare.

The debate over renaming Nizamabad has since intensified, with discussions around history, identity and political priorities gaining momentum in Telangana ahead of upcoming civic elections.
